SWFF Needs Volunteers

Bridges

Guys thank you so much for your support every year.  Here we are again.

The Southern Winds Film Festival is set for September 10-11 this year.  One of the biggest aspects about the festival that we are most proud of is bringing people to downtown Shawnee for them to experience our town and also to help the businesses around the area.  Filmmakers from around the country will be visiting and we want to give them the best experience possible.  What this requires is a big volunteer base of people.

WE WILL HOLD A MEETING THIS WEEK FOR PEOPLE TO SIGN UP AND HELP WITH HANGING POSTERS Continue reading

And it’s over…

grump

I don’t know how many of you who frequent the News-Star Blog are fans of Lost but I am a Lostie.  I discovered the show before its third season and power watched season 1 and 2 in about a month so I could watch it as it aired.  I’m not going to write about the final episode as to not ruin it for those out there who have it DVR’ed and have yet to watch it or those who might have never seen any of it and wish to wait and watch everything on DVD. Fitting Tribute to a Fallen Olympian

reasonmclucus

The opening ceremony for the Vancouver Olympics appeared to be flawless until the very end when the lighting of the cauldron didn’t go as planned. Initially I agreed with the commentators that the ending was the only glitch in an otherwise perfect opening.

After thinking about it for a few days I realized that the commentators were wrong. The deviation from the original plan made the opening ceremony perfect.

The ceremony began with four large pillar like “robots” coming up from the floor and beckoning representatives of the various Canadian peoples and others to the Olympics. At the end these same structures were to come up and form part of the cauldron which would contain the Olympic flame during the Vancouver Olympics. Continue reading

Games, Books and TV

Aquarius

Last night I had a new experience. I took the test to be a Jeopardy! contestant. This test is 50 questions. You have 15 secs to dig the answer out of your brain and type it in. I did all this. Now I have no idea how many questions I answered or how many I got right. It was too fast to keep up with my answers. If I ever do this  again I will have my husband with me and  shout it out when I get one right. After the test is over, they tell you that you won’t be informed about results and will never know how you did until you are contacted to come to some distant city to take a test in person and this could be a year away. Somehow, I’m not optimistic.

Most of you know that I am not a young person. Most of the time I consider this an asset, I have many years worth of trivia in my brain. Not because I am a brain but because I read all the time , keep up wih current events and work the hard crossword puzzles. Continue reading

Conan O’Brien Is the Villain

reasonmclucus

Conan O’Brien is the real villain in the “Tonight Show” controversy, contrary to the claims of his supporters. Several years ago O’Brien bamboozled NBC into taking the “Tonight Show” away from Jay Leno and giving it to him in spite of the fact that Leno had been leading his time slot for years. That’s the equivalent of benching Bret Favre to play a quarterback who has never made the playoffs.

Shortly before the transition from Leno to O’Brien someone at NBC figured out Leno was one of the few at the network who could actually win his time slot. To keep him, NBC decided to put him on in prime time even though variety shows, except for contest shows like “American Idol”, hadn’t worked in prime time for years. Continue reading
